Specialist pessary fitting and management for women with pelvic organ prolapse
A pessary is one of the most effective non-surgical treatments available for pelvic organ prolapse, yet many women are never told it is an option. Used well, a pessary can provide significant symptom relief, restoring comfort, confidence and the freedom to move, exercise and live without the constant awareness of prolapse symptoms.
Our specialist pessary clinic is led by Women’s Health Physiotherapist Jenny Fielding who has advanced postgraduate training in pessary fitting and ongoing management. Jenny provides expert fitting, ongoing reviews and long-term support, helping women find a solution that fits comfortably into their lives.
What a pessary actually is
A pessary is a small, soft, removable silicone device that is inserted into the vagina to support the pelvic organs from inside. It works by gently holding the bladder, uterus or bowel back into a more comfortable position, which reduces symptoms such as heaviness, dragging, bulging and discomfort with activity.
Pessaries come in many shapes and sizes, and finding the right one is what makes the difference between a good experience and a frustrating one. There is no single pessary that suits every woman, which is exactly why specialist fitting matters.
What our pessary clinic offers
Our service covers the full pessary pathway, including:
- Comprehensive prolapse assessment to confirm a pessary is the right option for you
- Expert fitting across a range of pessary types and sizes
- Education and support around insertion, removal and self management where appropriate
- Regular review appointments to monitor fit, comfort and skin health
- Coordination with your wider care team including consultant urogynaecologists where helpful
Who pessaries are for
Pessaries are an excellent option for women who:
- Have pelvic organ prolapse and want a conservative treatment alongside or instead of surgery
- Have completed a course of pelvic health physiotherapy but still have symptoms
- Want symptom relief while they finish their family before considering longer term treatment options
- Are not suitable for surgery or do not wish to have surgery
- Want to remain active and exercising without the awareness of prolapse symptoms
Some of our clients wear their pessary full time, whilst others wear only for sport or activity. We aim to teach all clients to self manage and independently remove and insert their pessary so you feel confident and empowered.
They are safe to use long term, and many women use a pessary successfully for years.
Joining the clinic
You do not need a referral from a consultant to be seen. If you have already had a prolapse assessment with us as part of our prolapse physiotherapy service, the transition into the pessary clinic is seamless.
If you are enquiring specifically about a pessary, we will begin with a thorough assessment to ensure it is the right option for you and to identify the type and fit most likely to provide effective symptom relief.
Pessary appointments are available exclusively at our Wimbledon clinic and are carried out by Jenny Fielding. Please note that pessary services are offered on a self-pay basis only.
